A representative of the international cricket body refuted claims made in Pakistani media that matches involving that team could be played during the October-November competition at a neutral site.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has refuted media rumours that Pakistan will play its matches at a neutral location, despite the fact that the official announcement of the dates and locations for this year’s ODI World Cup in India is still pending.
According to an ICC official, “as far as we are concerned, everything is full speed for a full event in India later this year.”
There may yet be time for one last comment.
In order to stage the Asia Cup in Pakistan yet host the India games in neutral locations, BCCI has discussed a “hybrid format” with the Pakistan board (PCB). According to reports in the Pakistani media, Pakistan’s World Cup matches will be moved to a neutral site using the same model. Bangladesh is being mentioned as a potential host country for these games.
Wasim Khan, GM of the ICC and former CEO of the PCB, was even mentioned in some media sources as predicting that Pakistan’s World Cup matches will be cancelled.
The BCCI is unlikely to allow PCB to use the Asia Cup as leverage in negotiations with the World Cup organising committee to move World Cup games from India, even though talks may be underway to keep the Asia Cup in Pakistan with only the India games and the final being moved out.
In 2019, England will host the World Cup, which will follow the same rules as the previous year’s competition. Prior to choosing the semi-finalists, all 10 teams competed against one another. By extension, India would be hosting nine Pakistani matches.
Cricket matches cannot be held in Pakistan without the government’s consent, according to the BCCI’s long-standing stance. In the ICC meeting, Pakistan is reportedly making the same case.
