Some Unknown Facts about Shaheen Afridi

Shaheen Afridi is a Pakistani fast bowler who plays for the Pakistan Cricket Team in international competitions. The young and aggressive paceman is capable of routinely bowling in the high 140s (kmph).

Shaheen grew up playing tennis ball cricket on the rugged slopes of Landi Kotal, a tribal enclave bordering Afghanistan. He was born into the Pashtun Zakhakhel Afridi tribe, which is said to be the largest Afridi tribe in the Khyber Agency province of Peshawar, Pakistan.

Shaheen’s older brother Riaz, who played a test match for Pakistan in 2004, sparked his interest in cricket. Shaheen’s ability as a fast bowler was first noticed by Riaz, who also taught him the foundations of fast bowling. Shaheen, who was under his tutelage, participated in his maiden selection trial for the FATA under-16 regional cricket squad. Shaheen, a 15-year-old boy who had previously only played tennis ball cricket, bowled with a hardball for the first time, easily passed the trials, and was later added to the FATA under-16 cricket squad. He donned clothes and accessories that he had taken from his brother to appear for the trial.

After being called up for the PCB’s regional under-16 tournament, Shaheen took 12 wickets and finished the competition with the most wickets. This followed his selection for the FATA team. He was able to participate in a cricket series against Australia thanks to his outstanding accomplishments in the regional under-16 championship for PCB.

In almost every domestic event in which he was chosen to play, the tall, speedy player never failed to dazzle everyone with the ball. Having only played amateur cricket for three years, he quickly rose through the ranks to join the Pakistan National Team in 2018.

Even before making his first-class cricket debut, Shaheen Afridi was chosen to play for Pakistan’s under-19 cricket squad at the age of 16.

Yasir Afridi, Shaheen Afridi’s cousin, is a professional football player who competed for Pakistan at the 2010 Asian Games.

It’s interesting to note that during his childhood, Shaheen had a strong interest in football in addition to cricket.

According to rumors in the media from March 2021, Shaheen Afridi’s parents asked former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi for his daughter Aqsa’s hand. Both families have approved of their marriage, and Shahid Afridi also stated as much on his Twitter account. According to reports, Aqsa and Shaheen are the same age.

Shaheen has established himself as a renowned fast bowler in international cricket, yet he was contemplating retirement a year before making his international debut in 2017. After a few poor performances for Lahore Qalander in the Pakistan Super League: Season 2017, Shaheen considered hanging up his boots, but he changed his mind. This information was disclosed in an interview with Cricket Pakistan in 2020 by former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed. He cited :

“ At the age of barely 17, shaheen started representing the qalandars. after a few disappointing outings, he came to me and said he no longer wanted to play cricket and that the money the proprietors of the qalandars had spent on him should be refunded. he would eventually become well-known for his athletic prowess, and anyone could go running, i assured him. we rested him for a while before bringing him back to face multan, where he took five wickets. at the end of the day, it’s about seeing talent and giving people an opportunity”.
