Some Unknown Facts about Mohammed Shami
- As a teenager, Mohammed Shami, a dedicated learner, used to arrive one hour earlier at his training location. He’d then build his own net and practice for hours.
- Interestingly, Shami’s three real brothers all desired to be fast bowlers as children.
- Shami’s achievement can be attributed to his father, Tousif Ali. His father, he claims, was the only person who saw his genuine ability as a bowler and convinced him to attempt the sport.
- After seeing Shami’s potential, his father immediately took him to a local cricket coach named Badruddin Siddique. In an interview, Badruddin said, “When I first saw him bowling at the nets as a 15-year-old kid, I knew this boy was not ordinary.” So I decided to coach him. Because we don’t have club cricket over here, I prepped him for the UP trials for a year. He was very cooperative, consistent, and hardworking. He never missed a workout session. He bowled really well at the under-19 trials, but he was not selected owing to politics. They begged me to bring him back next year, but I didn’t want Shami to miss a year. As a result, I encouraged his parents to send him to Kolkata.”
- Shami began playing for the Dalhousie Athletic Club in Kolkata when he was recognized by Debabrata Das, former assistant secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Shami’s bowling impressed him so much that he signed him to his own Town Club team for INR 75,000. Shami had nowhere else to stay in Kolkata at the time, according to Das, so he took temporary sanctuary in his home.
- During the 2014 IPL auctions, he was selected by Delhi for a whopping INR 4.25 crore.
- Shami is known as a reverse swing expert. This skill is the result of years of hard labor; he used to take old red balls from junior-level tournament organizers and shine them on one side. He then practiced with these old red balls that had a shine on one side to obtain the requisite reverse swing.
- Shami debuted for India as Shami Ahmed, but it was later revealed that his real name is Mohammed Shami. Shami acknowledged this in a media interview, adding, “I don’t know how my name got that tail.” Not Shami Ahmed, but Mohammed Shami.”
- Mohammad Shami earned the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets in the Tata IPL 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans; he finished the season with 28 wickets in 17 matches at an economy rate of 8.03.
