 Controversies

  •  Nepotism(Parchi)  :  When Imam-ul-Haq was chosen for the series against Sri Lanka in 2017, allegations were made that his uncle Inzamam-ul-Haq had favored him and referred to him as “Parchi.” Inzamam addressed the accusations by claiming that he was chosen for the team by head coach Mickey Arthur and coach Grant Flower as a result of his outstanding domestic cricket performances. He stated:  Not many people know that when Imam was originally selected for the international team, it was Grant Flower who approached me and said he had been watching Imam make runs in domestic cricket. The selecting committee then heard from head coach Mickey Arthur. His choice for me and him has been essential for both of us. But I want to remind those who have been raising this issue that even though I was not a member of the PCB in any position in 2012, he was selected for Pakistan’s Under-19 squad. In 2014, he was selected vice-captain of the Under-19 World Cup, paving the way for him to play international cricket.”  Imam was disheartened by the claims and ceased communicating with family and friends. He confined himself to his room and used to cry in the shower. He said, “When all of this started happening, I started eating alone. It was my first tour, and you know how things can go wrong on the first one. And every time I opened my phone, people were tagging me in social media posts or sending me stuff. I was depressed and couldn’t understand anything. I stopped communicating with my family since I didn’t want to put them under any strain because I was having difficulties. I turned off my phone and handed it to my manager, saying, “I can’t take this; please take them off me.” I recall crying in the shower for hours, despite the fact that I hadn’t even started playing. It’s all too easy for young players to become engulfed in self-doubt. That was the only thing on my mind at all times! I haven’t even played yet; what if I do play and fail miserably? My career will then be over. I wouldn’t leave my room for fear of being bothered outside, because Dubai has a sizable Pakistani community.”

  •  Multiple Female Affairs
In 2019, a Twitter user revealed screenshots of Imam’s discussions with many women, sparking outrage. He was labeled a creep and a predator. He expressed regret for his behavior and apologized to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Wasim Khan, Managing Director of PCB, stated that Imam accepted his error and expressed regret for his acts. He said,  “Imam expressed his regret for all that happened and apologized. He admitted his mistake as well. He said that a miscommunication caused the situation to get out of control. Despite the fact that this is a personal and private matter for him, we made it very clear to him that we expect all of our players to maintain the highest standards of ethics and discipline. We prefer not to comment on a player’s personal matters, but we do anticipate that our centrally contracted players will assume a more proactive leadership position as ambassadors for Pakistan cricket.
Pakistan. Only praying that similar tragedies won’t happen again.
