Some Unknown Facts about Mohammad Hafeez 

• Former Pakistani international cricketer Mohammad Hafeez participated in all three formats for the team. He was essentially an all-around player who could hit hard and, when necessary, provide some assistance with bowling.

• After Pakistan’s early elimination from the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup group stage, Mohammad Hafeez made his international debut. Despite scoring a half-century in his debut against Bangladesh, he did not perform well in his first matches. As a result, in late 2003, he was dropped from the tests and one-dayers that followed.

• In 2005, he was reinstated to the team once more as a result of his outstanding performances on the home circuit.

• On August 27, 2003, he faced Bangladesh and scored his first century. Hafeez was moved up the order in the batting against England at the Oval and hit a valiant 95 runs, although Pakistan was having trouble finding a reliable opening duo for the test match.

• He was kept for the test series against the West Indies in November of that year as a result of that performance. In Karachi, he scored his second century against the same opposition.

• He only managed to score 39 runs and claim two wickets in six games of the 2010 ICC Twenty20 World Cup. • Hafeez took Salman Butt’s spot for the series against South Africa in the UAE, and despite batting at the top of the order, he amassed a batting average of 32.50. After the series against New Zealand and the West Indies, he became a permanent member of the Test team.

• At the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh, on March 18, 2012, he had his first significant outing in one-day internationals against India during the 2012 Asia Cup. He scored 105 runs off 113 balls and partnered with Nasir Jamshed for 224 runs. This partnership beats Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar’s record of 144 runs in 1996 as Pakistan’s best opening partnership in ODIs against India.

• In 2012, he defeated Bangladesh in Dhaka and recorded his fourth international century. In a test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo in June 2012, he recorded his highest score of 196 runs. He supported Pakistan in their T20 international match against India in December 2012 as they chased down a massive 191-run target. In the second one-day international against India, he added 76 runs and formed a significant partnership with Nasir Jamshed that enabled Pakistan to win the series for the first time in seven years. Shahid Afridi’s performances allowed him to become the top all-around player.

• He became the second batter after Zaheer Abbas to have three centuries in an ODI series in December 2013 after scoring 122 runs in the first game, 140 runs in the third game, and 113 runs in the fourth game.

• Hafeez was forced to withdraw from the 2015 ICC World Cup due to a calf injury, and Nasir Jamshed took his place.

• He got 99 off 57 balls against New Zealand in their second T201 at Hamilton on December 20, 2020. He bowled the most economical spell in T201 against the West Indies on July 31, 2021, allowing just six runs in four overs.

• He was named vice captain of the ODI and test teams under Misbah-Ul-Haq in May 2012 and made captain of the Pakistan T20 team. He captained Pakistan to triumphs over Zimbabwe, the West Indies, and South Africa. He also tied records for the most T20 victories by a Pakistani captain and the most series victories for a Pakistani captain. Pakistan climbed to second place in the T201 World Rankings under his captaincy.

• Hafeez resigned as Pakistan’s captain after the team was eliminated from the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Imran Khan, a former Pakistani captain, questioned his choice and counseled him to remain in that position.

• Pakistan’s early elimination from the 2016 World Twenty20 in March 2016 generated a lot of side-splitting debate. Younis Khan, another team member, charged Hafeez with lying about his knee injury prior to the T20 series.

• Hafeez was selected for England’s 2016 visit despite his poor performance in the 2016 World Twenty20. While there, he was repeatedly dismissed for nothing and just once managed to score 11 runs in the first ODI. He was dropped from the remaining episodes of the series as a result of his poor performance. He missed a number of crucial series, including the West Indies series in the UAE.

• He was then chosen to play in the ODI series during Pakistan’s 2017 tour of Australia. He only managed to score four runs in the first game, but when Azhar Ali was forced to miss the second game owing to an injury, Hafeez was given the reins as captain of the Pakistani ODI team. He served as the team’s captain, and Pakistan won the game for the first time on Australian soil in 12 years. He also tallied 72 runs in that game, winning player of the match honors.

• He was then added to Pakistan’s World Cup cricket roster. With the exception of his performance in Pakistan’s second tournament game against England, where he scored 84 runs off 62 balls and took the important wicket of their captain Eoin Morgan, his other tournament performances were average, with low strike rate scores of 16, 9, 20, 32, 19, and 27. Additionally, he chose a pricey economic rate of approximately 6 per dollar.

•  Hafeez and six other team members tested positive for COVID-19 on June 23, 2020. But soon it was reported that his test results were negative. On April 10, 2021, he faced South Africa in his 100th T201 match. He was a member of Pakistan’s team for the 2021 World Twenty20 competition in the United Arab Emirates in September 2021.

• In terms of his IPL career, he was only ever chosen for the Kolkata Knight Riders team in 2008, when he managed to score 64 runs in 8 games and take 1 wicket. Due to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist tragedy, he was thus chosen to miss the 2009 IPL.

• He also participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as a player for the Peshawar Zalmi team, when he was signed for an astounding US$70,000. After three years of service, he decided to leave the team and join the Lahore Qalandars in the fourth PSL season.

• In addition to the IPL and PSL, he played for the Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League in December 2015. For the sixth Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season, which took place in December 2018, he joined the Rajshahi Kings after waiting three years.

• He declared his retirement from international cricket on January 3, 2022. He would, however, be available for the 2018 Pakistan Super League season. When discussing his retirement, he stated,

“I say good-bye to international cricket today with happiness and pride. In reality, I have accomplished and earned more than I had originally anticipated, and for that, I am grateful to all the cricket teammates, captains, helpers, and Pakistan Cricket Board who supported me throughout my career.

In addition, he adds,

“And, of course, my family, who made significant sacrifices to see that I was able to fulfill my goal of representing Pakistan internationally. I feel myself to be very fortunate, grateful, and proud to have been selected to wear the Pakistani flag-adorned national kit for 18 years. Every time I was on the field, I made sure to play hard and tough while staying true to the rich traditions and spirit of cricket, since my country and my team have always come first to me.

• Ramiz Raja, the PCB’s chairman, said : 

“Over time, his game changed, intelligently reacting to new formats. Later in his career, he specialized in T20, where he was always up to date on the current requirements of this exam format. His batsmanship took a quick turn as he began to hit sixes seemingly at will. We at the PCB are grateful that he proudly wore the green blazer. I send him my best wishes for success in the future and once again acknowledge his outstanding contribution to Pakistan cricket.
